FAQs

1. Is the project just for and individual artist alone or can I, for example, propose developing a dance project in duet or even in partnershio with another form of artistic expression (e.g. a visual artist ou musician)?
As stipulated in the regulations, this call is exclusively intended for individual artists, therefore the application must be submitted by a single artist. Projects must be conceived and presented individually and proposals cannot be submitted in duets or in partnership with other artists.
2. Since I am from São Miguel, should the proposal be in relation to the characteristics of the island where I live or of another island?
Based on the call, the proposal may address the characteristics of the island where it resides (São Miguel) as well as other islands, as long as it is related to the theme of reflection on the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira and the concepts of "island" and "unknown". The objective is to explore little-known or difficult-to-perceive dimensions of both the archipelagos themselves and the neighboring islands, considering the artistic exchange that will take place.
3. How long is the artistic residency in June? Or will it only be said afterwards?
The duration of the residency in June 2025 will be one week, with a fixed date, to be announced very soon.
4. Is the accommodation provided by you or do we have to find it ourselves, with your help?
Accommodation is arranged through us. The amount allocated for hosting expenses (travel, insurance and accommodation) is not given directly to the artists, but rather managed by the Open Call organization, ensuring all the logistics necessary for the entire residency.
5. I have been a resident of Madeira for two years. Is this enough to be considered a resident or do I need a Portuguese passport?
Being a resident of Madeira for two years qualifies you as a resident for the purposes of this call. To prove your residency, you will need a long-term rental agreement or a certificate of residence registration issued by the local authority. A Portuguese passport is not required.
6. I'm from the Azores. How many days is the artistic residency? Will it be in Funchal or Porto Santo? Are the dates fixed in June or flexible?
The residency lasts one week and for artists residing in the Azores it will take place in Madeira, Funchal. The artistic residencies will take place in June 2025 with fixed and non-flexible dates.
7. Is the amount of 1.050€ for tavel, insurance, transportation and accommodation allocated directly by the organization or is it passed on to the artist for their own management and deducted when expenses are presented with an invoice?
The amount of 1.050€ covers the artist's accommodation expenses and will be managed directly by the organization. It will not be passed on to the artist, nor subject to reimbursement uopn invoice.
8. What type of insurance does it include?
The insurance covers travel and personal accidents throughout the stay.
9. What type of accommodation do you provide? Do we have access to a kitchen? Do we have access to any workspace?
The accommodation provided for the artistic residency on Madeira Island has a workspace and access to a kitchen. The facilities are well equipped, with a fully equipped kitchen, excellent Wi-Fi coverage, hot water, among other amenities.
10. What kind of technical support do you offer for production and/or assembly?
Technical support will be provided for assembly and disassembly in accordance with available local resources and the specific needs of each selected project.
11. Does transportation include travel within the island? Or between Funchal and Porto Santo? What kind? Private vehicle or public transport?
The route between Funchal and Porto Santo is not included. The residency will take place exclusively on Madeira Island. Local transportation is included in the amount allocated for the per diem. We recommend that artists organize their travel according to the individual needs of each project, and may use public transport, shared mobility services or car rental, depending on the most convenient option. The organization team will be available to assist with information about the means of transport available on the island.
12. Is the work donated to the organizing institution? What kind of donation?
The work is not donated to the organization. However, it will be loaned for use during the group exhibition and any future initiatives in 2026. After this period, the work will be returned to the artist.
13. Is the amount of 500€ given to the artist for their own management or as compensation through an invoice?
This amount will be transferred to the artist after justification upon presentation of an invoice, up to the limit of 500€.
