APCA - Atlantic Culture Promotion Agency launched yesterday the documentary "What is Watt?" which explores the project and its recent tour carried out in 2024 across the island of Madeira.
"What is Watt?" was founded in 2001 by António Dantas, Celeste Cerqueira and Silvestre Pestana with the aim of promoting the languages of video art from different cultures. This is an interdisciplinary artistic project that, since then, has brought together a group of artists with the intention of developing various works, through multiple uses of existing technological resources. This project addresses the questioning of artistic praxis in contemporary times, which is in line with emerging technologies and the consequent availability of global participation. In other words, a generalized tendency towards the dematerialization of works of art is recognized, which corresponds to multiple connections between art, science and technology.
The idea of presenting the project "What is Watt?" again had the purpose of achieving two main vectors: on the one hand, to establish the creative heritage with a strong Madeiran stamp in the field of new media and experimental poetry, and, on the other hand, to offer the public the opportunity to rediscover the project that has already celebrated more than 20 years, through the establishment of a new traveling exhibition.
Under the organization of APCA, in 2024, the project was presented again through a traveling exhibition that toured the Autonomous Region of Madeira, with exhibitions in São Vicente, Porto Santo, Machico, Santana and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. Also, "What is Watt?" was present on the continent, with an exhibition in the city of Porto. This circulation featured works by renowned artists such as António Barros, António Dantas, Carlos Valente, Celeste Cerqueira, Evangelina Sirgado de Sousa, Hugo Olim, Pedro Pestana and Silvestre Pestana, reaffirming the creative legacy of the project.
The documentary "What is Watt?" is now available on APCA Madeira's digital platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, expanding access to the history and relevance of this innovative project that is now celebrating more than 20 years of existence.
A production by APCA Madeira with the support of the Portuguese Republic - Culture / Directorate-General for the Arts.
