History

The Agency for the Promotion of the Atlantic Culture (APCA) is a non-profit private organisation based in Madeira Island since 2005 with the purpose of contributing for the Atlantic islands Culture, Knowledge and Arts development and disclosure throughout the widest geographical area.

Since then, working in the areas of science, culture and technology, APCA has been conceiving and developing several projects, as well as it has constituted itself as partner of the Regional Government of Madeira and of other both public and private entities, introducing in its structure several initiatives developed by credited technicians, which is another consequence of the cooperation with the Regional Government, and has hosted several received higher education student internships. This model based on the network action concept of the organization, has had as an immediate consequence the making of many initiatives.

Regarding the areas of education and knowledge, some examples are the ZOOM project, which was directed to students in basic and secondary levels of education and has promoted the knowledge among these concerning Media features; and the project CHRONOS (2007-2009), co-financed by the Interreg-Mac program with the aim of promoting studies about the History and Culture of the Atlantic Islands. Concerning this, it is a must to highlight the ability of APCA in managing projects based in international partnerships, aside with local ones. Some other project examples are the PI ESPECIAL and the ARQUEOMAC (PCT MAC), being the first directed to the introduction of advanced ICT among students of the special needs education system and the second with the aim of promoting the Macarronesian Islands as a cultural and scientific tourist destiny, using its archaeological heritage as a primary content.

In 2010, APCA has started developing the PATRISIG project whose double goal regards the deepening of general knowledge concerning local ethnography as well as making available a whole roll of information concerning several areas both to locals and tourists. Once again at this point, APCA has developed a groundbreaking approach, particularly in what concerns the process of gathering information which provided references that are not usually mentioned.

Also concerning the knowledge area, APCA is currently developing the APRENDER MADEIRA project. Aiming to update and expand the encyclopedic knowledge about Madeira following the example of the Elucidário Madeirense, a reference work concerning the History of the island. This project's wide scale is a product of partnerships with more than ten national and international universities holding up to five hundred researchers working for this project and it has been sustained by several achievements such as the online platform (www.aprendermadeira.net) making studies available and directed to the different user profiles, the edition of the physical encyclopedia, several editions and editions of historic works concerning the Literature and History of Madeira, contributing to the increase of the community's historic literacy. The growth possibilities of the project are based on its ability on gathering complementary valences.

Concerning cultural events organization, highlight to the fact that APCA has produced the MADEIRADiG Festival since 2004, which in Portugal is the oldest event on its genre and it is considered to be a national reference among the field of digital music having achieved international recognition and being so an important cultural event able to promote Madeira as tourist destiny. Besides MADEIRADiG, APCA was also encharged of the production and organization of the Festival Raízes do Atlântico, a public event belonging to the former DRAC, in Funchal from 1999 to 2013.

The contribution of APCA to society is made also through the provision of accumulated experience in cultural management, including the necessary financial aspects of the training projects. Among these, there was the NAVE project, drawn up by a Cultural Management Master's degree student from the University of Madeira, but here was also significant the direction and support that APCA was able to provide to this project as well as to other internships carried out under the professional technical education.

On a general perspective, the evolution of this organization is based on the recent development of the cultural associations as well as the creative and cultural industries, as registered on the last decades, a growth that was partly sustained by several public/private partnerships. To APCA, as well as to all entities working in this area, there are growth opportunities in the short time, in order to continue to work on all projects listed above, defying its current limits and strictly directed to the community's wealth.
